Bruce graduated from William Chrisman H.S. in Independence, Mo. He was interested in art in Elementary school an early age, but had no art classes in High School or College. He attended Graceland University and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree. He was in the Army 1955-57, stationed at Fort Riley.
When first married, he expressed his artistic flair by doing floral arrangements, refinishing old furniture, and making small wooden and ceramic sculptures from found objects. On his 50th birthday, his wife gave him art lessons. They were the first real studies I had. I learned many painting techniques.” Then, he took lessons with Lois Schultz, a locally known Raytown artist for 17 years. Presently, he studies with Sharon Nimmo of Independence.
Bruce has been painting in oil and acrylic on canvas for 30 years, selecting subjects of landscape, flowers, natural and street scenes. He finds inspirations from his many travels to England, France, Spain and the Caribbean. A visit to his home also shows Bruce to be an accomplished needlepoint artist. His paintings have been awarded many ribbons.
